Frequency Asked Question
COIDA (Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act) is a legal requirement in South Africa that ensures employees are covered if they get injured or become ill because of their work. It is managed through the Workman’s Compensation Fund and applies to almost all employers who hire even one employee.
Having COIDA registration protects both the employer and employee. It ensures that if an accident happens in the workplace, medical expenses and compensation are covered by the fund instead of the business owner paying out of pocket. It also keeps your business compliant with South African labour laws, which is essential for operating legally and applying for contracts or tenders.
Yes, COIDA registration is compulsory for all employers who hire one or more employees, including full-time, part-time, temporary, and domestic workers such as gardeners, cleaners, nannies, and drivers. The law requires employers to register within 7 working days of employing staff.
Failing to register can lead to serious consequences, including legal penalties and liability for employee injuries or illnesses. It can also prevent your business from obtaining a Letter of Good Standing, which is often required for government contracts, private tenders, and large corporate work.
COIDA registration typically takes around 1 week when processed correctly and without complications. However, timelines can vary depending on the accuracy of submitted information and the processing speed of the Department of Labour.
In some cases where additional verification is required, the process may take longer. This is why we handle the entire application on your behalf—to reduce delays, avoid errors, and ensure your registration is completed as quickly as possible.
A Letter of Good Standing is an official document issued by the Workman’s Compensation Fund confirming that your COIDA registration is active and up to date. It proves that your business is compliant with labour regulations.
This document is extremely important for securing tenders, contracts, and business deals, especially with government departments and large corporations. Without it, many opportunities will automatically reject your business even if you are otherwise qualified.
If you fail to register for COIDA when you are legally required to, your business may face penalties, fines, and potential legal action. More importantly, you become personally liable for any workplace injuries or illnesses suffered by your employees.
This means you would have to cover medical costs and compensation yourself, which can be financially devastating. Additionally, you will not be able to obtain a Letter of Good Standing, limiting your ability to win tenders or secure formal business contracts.
Yes, even if you only have one employee, COIDA registration is still mandatory. The law does not set a minimum number of employees before registration is required.
This includes domestic workers such as gardeners, nannies, and drivers. As soon as you employ someone under your business or household, you are required to register with the Workman’s Compensation Fund to ensure they are protected.
We handle the entire process for you, so you don’t need to deal with government offices or complicated forms. All we require is your Company Registration Number (CIPC), a certified copy of the business owner’s ID or passport, and a brief description of your business activities.
If you already employ staff, we may also request basic employee details. From there, our team completes and submits the full COIDA application on your behalf, ensuring everything is done correctly and efficiently to avoid delays.
